Flannel Dress Refurb

Being a child of the 90s, I am loving the flannel trend that’s in style for this fall. However, with my current shopping budget of $0, I haven’t been able to buy any new clothes (at least, not at retail price) this year. So, I’ve resorted to purchasing things at the thrift store and remaking them.

Enter the flannel dress. Last week, I found a hideously ugly “mom dress” – complete with an empire waist, plaid flannel and an ankle-length hem. Alas, I had a vision…and today I made it into reality.

Here’s sort of what it looked like before:

And here’s what it looks like now:

How I did it:

  1. First, I washed the dress.
  2. Next, I put it on to see how long I wanted it to be. Since it has buttons up the front, I just noted the button at the point I wanted to cut it.
  3. I cut the hem off about 1.5″ longer than I wanted it to end up.
  4. I turned up the hem 1/2 inch and pressed, and then another inch and pressed (so there are no raw edges left exposed.
  5. Using the hem I cut off, I created two long ties to go on the back.
  6. I opened up the side seams just above the empire waist and inserted the ties.
  7. Voila! Lumberjack steeze.

What do you think? Is it a hit or miss?
