Harper and I decided to brave the downtown parking (which was really no issue at all, and only $3) on Wednesday and check out the new City Creek shopping center. I have to say, it kind of feels like Salt Lake City is a REAL city now. Despite the fact that the shopping center has some weird rules and is closed on Sundays, I felt like we were transported to Michigan Avenue for a couple hours. The whole downtown area seems rejuvenated now that the place has opened.
We first went to the food court to grab a bite to eat, and then we walked around to check out some of the stores. Finally, we met up with Mickelle and Grayson before hitting up a couple parks to take our outfit photos. Even with the whole homeless-drunk-man-trying-to-operate-my-camera-for-me episode, we had a lovely day.
As for our outfits…well, I think mine needs a little help. First, let’s talk about the pants…

I made these pants using some lovely fabric I got at the fabulous Tissu on Pierpont in downtown Salt Lake City.

After washing/drying the fabric (I always do this so I can continue to machine wash/dry my garments after being made), I had JUST enough for the legs, so I used some thrifted brown fabric for the waistband. Washing and drying the fabric had the unintentional but beautiful effect of creating almost a micropleat texture.

I love it! It did present some challenges though since I couldn’t decide whether to stretch the fabric out for cutting or leave it as is. I decided NOT to stretch it, and ultimately, I ended up with some huge pants. I kept basting, trying on and making them smaller until they fit to my satisfaction.
Here’s the problem: I’m just really not feeling this outfit. I read on a blog somewhere that you should either go “tight or tucked” when selecting a top to go with palazzo pants…so, I found this shirt at the thrift store and thought it would be perfect tucked. It’s probably early 90s, raw silk…from the Limited (remember when raw silk was ALL the rage?). It’s super comfortable and pretty long, too. But I just don’t think it works. I think it would look better with leggings or a short skirt with a belt (untucked, perhaps).
What do you think? Would a more fitted, tank-top style shirt look better? Maybe in brown?
Also, the pants scare me just a little bit. The length is pretty perfect - it just grazes the floor in the back. However, when I bend over or go up stairs, the fullness of the legs ends up under my shoes or wrapped around my legs in a way that makes me feel like I’m going to seriously eat it. I am wearing platform wedges (also thrifted), so they are good about not getting caught under my pants…but still. It’s just not a comfortable feeling when carrying around a little one.
Finally, the weight of the pants causes the waist to fall down after a couple hours of wear. I think I will take them up a bit if I want them to stay high-rise. OR, I could let them fall lower on the waist and take up the length.
Can you tell I’m at a loss? I have a love/hate relationship with these pants. Anyway…BRING ON THE CUTE!

I think this little girl gets cuter every time I look at her.

She is still getting over her three-week bout which RSV/bronchiolitis, so we have been quarantined for a while. No Book Babies or fraternizing with other babies for us. So, we decided to hit up some parks on Wednesday and just get out of the house for some fun.

She’s sick…but as usual, still happy. Oh and hey - look! No more mini tooth on the left side of my smile. I only have my temporary crown in now, but I am getting impressions done tomorrow for the final one. I can’t wait!!!! Scott even told me the other day that he noticed I have already been smiling more since I feel so much more confident about it. I love that! (It makes me feel a little better about the smile lines that seem to have started developing only since having Harper - I guess there are worse ways to get wrinkles!)

Harper is wearing a thrifted top by Genuine Kids by Oshkosh, and her pants were made by me using my new Baby Got Back sewing pattern. It’s a good thing her cuteness makes up for me when I’m having an off day!
