Wardrobe Architect - My Color Palette

Wardrobe Architect: My Color Palette

I recently came to the conclusion that I had no idea what colors looked good on me. In fact, I don’t have much of an idea what clothing shapes/styles flatter my figure or what my figure even IS for that matter. I blame that on my weight fluctuating by 50 pounds (three times over) and my bust measurement varying between five cup sizes over the past five years. And of course, the clothing that worked for my lifestyle five years ago has all since been donated or sold. I blame (almost) three babies. :)

I’m left with a pretty horrendous hodge podge of ill-fitting, non-flattering clothes in pretty much every shade of gray you can imagine. Much of it is maternity, and for the first time in my life, I’m actually wearing out clothes. So once the baby weight comes off and I get myself into some semblance of shape again, I plan to work toward creating a carefully planned wardrobe that suits my taste, body type, coloring and lifestyle. AND, I plan to make it handmade.

I’ve been working through Colette’s Wardrobe Architect series, and it’s been a huge help. I started out with identifying my color “season” and determining which of the suggested colors I like/wear the most.

Based on the coloring of my hair, skin and eyes, I am considered a “soft summer.” My natural hair color is light, ashy brown, and I have fair skin and gray/blue eyes. The undertones in my skin look blue or green depending on the light, so I’m kind of neutral there. This means that muted, cool tones are the most flattering on me, and bright, pure colors are less so. Of course, this doesn’t mean I can never wear those colors; it just means my core wardrobe should be built from what looks consistently good.

Now, if you’re a sewist/fabric hoarder, you KNOW how hard it can be to avoid brightly colored, fun, modern fabric prints in ALL. THE. COLORWAYS. But, this is something I’m going to work on as I not only build a new wardrobe, but a new fabric stash. I’m hoping it will save me some money and time at the fabric store. Okay, who am I kidding. I love spending money and time at the fabric store. I’m just hoping it will help me look better. :)

You can see my extended color palette above. I foresee the bulk of my wardrobe hitting in the blues, grays and tans with a spot of color here and there. And if you’re curious, I’ve created a Pinterest board of the clothing shapes/styles that most appeal to me:

I’m hoping this exercises will help me in my journey! Are you in?!

Quick update: I’m currently 38 weeks pregnant with baby #3 and am due around the first week of May. I have gained 50 pounds this pregnancy and hope to be back in semi-normal (new normal?) shape within 6-9 months. I’m hoping to be blogging a lot more and documenting my handmade wardrobe/weight loss journey here in the coming months. I’ve also been working my fingers off creating an almost completely handmade spring/summer wardrobe for Harper (almost 4) and Ezra (almost 2). I’ll be documenting that here, too! Stay tuned! And thanks for sticking around during my recent absense!

I love this post!! And it’s totally a topic I’m deeply interested in, too!! I so hear what you’re saying. I want to find cute clothes in my colors that flatter my figure, too. Yes, indeed, the hodgepodge of ill-fitting clothes-me too. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers these next several weeks as you go through this delivery, courageous girl! You can do it!!! I think your hair color and eye color are similar to mine. Mine is a dirty blonde and I’m blue-eyed. When I had my colors done about five years ago, I was told I was a “summer,” too. Ever since, I’ve gravitated to summer colors (I love when the summer-colored dresses come out in the catalogs and stores; but would so love to learn how to sew my own, to better fit my body shape-especially up top, where my torso always seems to be longer than most of the blouses and bodices reach. So interesting you found the muted tones to work best for you. I wonder if mine are more muted or bright? This is making me curious to revisit these “colors,” too. Please keep us posted on the fabrics you’re finding and the outfits you’re putting together in your color “season!” :) I love your Pinterest board. :) Luv the “I’m sew happy” t-shirt above, too. Just the top I’d wear to my sewing group!

I’m glad someone else likes my style! Or, my hopeful style! Ha! It’s easy-going, for sure.

Hi Lauren! I just stumbled upon your blog and am really enjoying it! This page especially caught my attention because of the color palette you are showing. If you are questioning what colors, styles, textures, look best on you, I encourage you to check out “Energy Profiling” at Liveyourtruth.com. Carol Tuttle is the creator of this system which helps you identify your true nature based on your movement, which includes, physical movement, thought/feeling process, tendencies, facial characteristics. It is so interesting to learn this information, because when you identify your true nature, it helps you LIVE your truth and to better understand those around you and why they do and say the things they do. It helps take judgement out and invite more love in your relationships. After learning which of the 4 Energy Types you are dominant in, she has a fabulous program called “Dressing Your Truth” which teaches you the way to dress that honors and supports your type of beauty. I am a Type 2, which is a soft, subtle, calming, elegant, peaceful nature and the colors I wear are the ones in your palette above! Muted tones. On me they are perfect because they honor my subdued and soft nature. If a woman who is very bold, or dynamic were to wear these colors, she could be overlooked or seen as frumpy and blah!! Check it out! You will love it, and she also teaches parents as they understand their childrens true nature, they can parent them in a way that honors and supports them, so you have less drama and anguish as a parent. She wrote a book called “The Child Whisperer” that guides you in this process. Best to you and thanks for all your amazing creativity!!
