They Like Me…They Really Like Me!

People love to hate mommy bloggers. Heck, I used to hate mommy bloggers. You know, I hated them…and I loved them, too. I made fun of them but secretly lurked behind the mask of a random IP address to see what their kids wore on the first day of school…their latest craft projects…and what bands they were into.

Alas, I find myself…A MOMMY BLOGGER.

Now get this - I never imagined I would be writing this post. But, I get it. I truly get it. When you become a mommy, you become isolated. And if you’re like me, with no family nearby to celebrate said mommyhood, it gets damn lonely. DAMN LONELY. Not only that, but you begin to crave the recognition and sense of achievement you got before when you had a full-time job with deadlines. And reports. And goals. And reviews. (Yes, I just named all the things I hated about having a full-time job. The same things that I now miss.)

Motherhood: you are a thankless job.

Now don’t get me wrong. My husband tells me all the time that he thinks I’m doing a great job. And the smiles and coos that Harper makes tell me that she loves me and appreciates my wiping her butt somewhat regularly. But you know what? Sometimes I just need someone to tell me I’m awesome.

Enter my blog, Facebook, Etsy, Ravelry and yes, Google Analytics.

Wha?

I know, I know. I’m probably sounding pretty self-centered right now. But I gotta tell you, there’s nothing like seeing your tab of hearts go up on Etsy or Ravelry. Or getting that “New Comment” email. The second my iPhone lights up with “So-and-so likes your status update,” I, too, light up with a sense or pride and joy that I was able to compile a somewhat coherent and interesting statement to post to the Interwebz.

I know, I sound pitiful right now.

But if you’re a stay-at-home mom who used to thrive on the competition and pace of the career-driven lifestyle, you can probably understand. We need someone, ANYONE - stranger or not - to tell us we’re awesome once in a while. So yes, I am a mommy blogger. Blogging gives me a way to connect with other people who might be thinking or going through the same thing I’m going through. It gives me a way to get a thumbs up every now and then from someone who thinks I’m just a little bit cool. And it gives me a way to share the (possibly mundane) things I do everyday with people that actually appreciate them and understand what a triumph it can be for a stay-at-home mom to get something simple like baking a loaf of bread done.

Ditto for Facebook, Ravelry, Etsy…you get the picture. Don’t even get me started on Google Analytics.

So if you have a moment, leave your favorite up-and-coming mommy blogger a comment or two on her blog. Or better yet, share her latest creation on your Facebook wall, or hey…just give her a REAL PHONE CALL and tell her she’s doing a great job. Just don’t be offended if she doesn’t call you back.

She’s probably cleaning up poop.

You are a great mom. Watching you in Montana with all the new people and taking care of Harper was neat. She is a happy baby because she knows she is loved.

I don’t browse Etsy, I don’t even know what Ravelry is, and I have recently cleaned out my FB and stayed mostly off of it… but I think you’re awesome!!! So, there’s that.

Everything you ever post on Facebook or your blog has been entertaining to me. I love the humility that you’ve displayed in your past few posts about mommy hood and the things you are learning from being a stay at home mom. I can totally relate to your feelings and am right there with you- having experienced those feelings or in the midst of them now. You have a lot of admirable talents. In my opinion, your decision to be your childs primary caregiver is the best decision you could have ever made.

And please don’t judge me for my improper use of prepositions or any other mistake I may have made! ;)

Christi - thank you so much. And don’t worry, I won’t judge you. :) I make my share of mistakes, too. I just hate seeing the reality stars CONSTANTLY making the mistakes while they think they’re sounding so smart. Ick.
