Luxe sweatshirts, as they’re called, are a big deal right now. And lucky for me because I could live in a sweatshirt if that were socially acceptable. And sweatpants, too, but I’ll save those for another post.
This is a self-drafted pattern that turned out quite well considering it was my first shot at this particular design. It features drop shoulders, a crew neck, straight shape (no waist shaping) and ribbed bands to finish off the neck, sleeves and hem. I sewed the entire thing with a serger, and it came together super fast.
Shockingly, the fit in through the torso and arms is spot-on. I do plan to shorten the overall length and sleeve length for the next one though, and I’ll probably lower the neckline a tad as well. Because this sweater knit is very stretchy, I might grade it up if I choose to use a more stable fabric like French terry for future versions. And since I happened to procure some amazingly high-quality French terry over the weekend, this will probably be happening!
The fabric is a super stretchy sweater knit from Joann. I loved it in the store, but I have fallen a little bit less in love with it after wearing it. There’s nothing really wrong with the fabric, but I don’t think the colors suit me very well. Both my mom’s and dad’s high school colors were black and gold (not the good kind that seems to be en vogue right now), and the combination always strikes me as being very 70s and kind of dull. In fact, this pattern almost perfectly matches my mom’s camera strap from the 1970s that currently lives on my Nikon.
It also doesn’t recover super well, and I can see it losing its shape with longer wear. Perhaps the changes to the overall length and sleeves that I’m planning will remedy this somewhat. What do you think about it? I think it’s a step in the right direction; I just need to tweak the pattern a bit. And who knows - once it’s done, maybe I’ll share!
