Sew in Tune by Lauren Dahl

Sew in Tune: Mumford & My Son

Sew in Tune is a super fun series hosted by MellySews and Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! I was so excited when these ladies asked me to be a part of their series since I haven’t done much any sewing for Ezra since he was born in July.

This shirt was created with the Peek-a-Boo Pattern Shop Classic Oxford pattern (affiliate link) using pinpoint oxford purchased at A Fashionable Stitch. I have a LOT of room for improvement here! First, I should have made the buttonholes vertical. Doh. I’m not sure what I was thinking…maybe that I’ve never sewn this type of shirt before? I’ll give myself a mulligan on that. Second, I shouldn’t have used such stiff interfacing. Next time, I will go with something really lightweight. And finally, I added one extra buttonhole at the bottom before I realized it was too close to the bottom hem. So, this shirt ended up being about an inch shorter than the pattern called for since I had to essentially cut off a part and sew that extra buttonhole into the narrow hem. I made the 12mos size, and it was a tad big on Ezra. It would be fine except for that inch or so I cut off the bottom…now he doesn’t really have much room to grow before he’s too tall for this! Oh well. I will definitely be making more of these.

I used to be of the mind that sewing for boys was BOR-ING…and not fun at all. But my mind has been changed! Sewing for boys is great because it allows me to focus on little details and perfecting my technique rather than frilly fabrics and unique shapes. I love it.

The jeans are sewn in stretch denim from A Fashionable Stitch and from Ottobre 4/2013 - the Alvin Stretch Baby Jeans. I made a 74. Doh again! Way too big. I guess I overestimate my kids’ sizes?! They were great practice though. The hat is the Fedora Hat from Elegance & Elephants (affiliate link), and it is just brilliant. I used this lovely linen my friend Juliette gifted me (the navy gingham in the shirt lining, too! Thank you, dear!) and Bemberg lining for the inside. It was a little tricky to get all those curvy seams put together, but practice makes perfect…

Next, the vest…Oh, the vest. Isn’t it just the cutest??! Like the rest of this outfit (except for the hat), it ended up a bit big. I think I sewed the 18mos size…so that’s really my fault. It came together brilliantly and in maybe half an hour. The fabric is from Joann, and the pattern is the Little Gentleman Vest by Peek-a-Boo Patterns (affiliate link). I definitely think Ezra needs more of these in his closet!

Finally, the tie (my favorite part of the whole ensemble!). This thing took about 10 minutes to make from shot cotton purchased at Elaine’s Quilt Block, and I did it using the Little Man Tie Tutorial/Pattern (free!) on Very Homemade. It just makes the whole outfit!

The boots are hand-me-downs from big sister and were purchased a couple years ago at Savers. And these photos? Ha. My husband helped me schlep his cello 500 miles to our family vacation in Bishop, California just for this little setup. Pretty cute, huh?

My inspiration for this outfit was the ubiquitous fashion of Mumford & Sons. People seem to either love it or hate it, but I, for one, just adore it! It’s classic but edgy and wearable all at the same time.

(Yes, I’m aware that the video below is a parody - not actually Mumford & Sons in the video. But this look was what I was going for!)

What do you think? Do you love sewing for YOUR little man as much as I do?!

  • Stacey

Thank you for joining the series Lauren. I love how the outfit turned out and think it fits the feel of Mumford and Sons perfectly. The photos with the Cello turned out fabulously! Keep sewing for that little guy!

Oh my gosh…so cute! We are going to a wedding in a few weeks and I was going to be lazy and just put Ted in a onesie, but now I totally want to dress him up mama-made man style! There’s nothing wrong with doing shirt buttonholes the way you did. They actually stay closed better. I believe they used to be done that orientation, but these days are done the other way because it’s quicker to do them in a line.

    • http://www.laurendahl.com/ Lauren Dahl

This is such a late response…but you should totally dress him up! I wanna see!!

      • http://www.thingsforboys.com/ abby @ thingsforboys

My MIL ended up babysitting him so he didn’t come to the wedding. Probably a good thing, I got to have champagne and didn’t stress myself out beforehand making a super cute baby outift 😉 I’ll save it for Easter

  • Mie @ Sewing Like Mad

Seriously how cute is your son!!!! Fabulous outfit….even though the button holes is vertical hahaha - we live and we learn, right!

    • http://www.laurendahl.com/ Lauren Dahl

At least I have you to keep me (and my buttonholes) straight from now on! Hehehe. 😉

  • Charity

What an adorablely dapper little guy! Love the outfit. The great thing about sewing something too big for a little person is that they grow so quickly. =)

  • Michelle

This is PRECIOUS! What a great outfit for a CUTE little guy! #dapperbaby

  • Karly

Could he be any cuter???? I love sewing for my son and I love seeing so many other mums do it too! Good luck for season 9!

    • http://www.laurendahl.com/ Lauren Dahl

Thank you so much, Karly! It was a really good thing I didn’t make it this season. I would have failed all over the place. But I’m thinking about maybe making more of an effort (sewing along, commenting, etc.) for an upcoming season. :)

  • Brooke

This is just perfect… The outfit, the boy- all great! I have grown to love sewing for my boys. It really is fun to give them an edgy style all their own.

    • http://www.laurendahl.com/ Lauren Dahl

Yes, I love that! I can’t wait until he’s a little bigger and we can have some fun with his style!

  • Bethany

Thanks for letting us take a look. You’ve inspired me! I followed your link from PR&P (good luck, btw). I have 3 boys and then a daughter. I haven’t sewn much except costumes and bow ties for my little men. I just finished a beautiful Easter dress for my daughter and it never occurred to me to make dress shirts for my little men. Maybe I’ll give it a go and they can each have something made by mom for spring and Easter Sunday. And I agree with the previous commenter about the buttons. I’ve been taught that that way do doing button holes is a more “high end” way of doing it because it holds it’s shape more and takes more time. When the buttons holes are vertical, you can just go straight down the shirt, but when they lie horizontally, you have to pick up the garment and reposition it each time. So it takes a lot mor care, concern and attention (and time). P.s. You can check out my new Easter dress and some costumes if you’d like at my new blog, Sew-Not-Perfect.blogspot.com
