Postpartum Body Update: Three Months

Wow. I can’t believe three months (plus) have come and gone since little Finny was born. I had intended to do more frequent updates on my weight loss/fitness progress, but you know…things got in the way. So here I am, three months and a few days into life with three little ones.

If you’re new to my blog, I want to give a little explanation. After I had my third baby, I decided to post photos of my body a couple weeks before giving birth, a couple days after giving birth and a couple weeks postpartum. My goal was to show what normal people look like after having a baby - or three! I know how difficult those few months after giving birth can be on a new mom’s body image and self esteem, and I imagined that seeing a normal progression could potentially help someone.

Now, I’ve entered the phase where my weight is almost back to normal (I still have 15 pounds to go), and I’m (barely) fitting into my old clothes. I hold all my weight in my midsection, so buttoning up my pants is still quite a challenge. My focus is now on getting enough rest, drinking enough water, eating healthier and getting into an exercise routine.

Here’s how I look now:

three months postpartum

I had been feeling quite down on myself the last couple weeks about my continued waistline struggles (even though that’s COMPLETELY irrational given the short amount of time since I gave birth, but these hormones…that’s what they do to us!), but I’m feeling a little better since seeing these photos. I have to laugh a little though because as you can see, my bum has gone the way of the 40 pounds I’ve lost so far. It’s almost non-existent! I’m hoping some intense lower-body workouts will at least stop the decline. Ha!

Speaking of intense workouts…those of you who follow me on Instagram know that I started the Bikini Body Guide at about three weeks postpartum (yes, yes, I know…but it was the easiest birth ever). Well, it was going great, and I completed the pre-training and got to the second week of the regular 12-week program. Then, I hit a wall. HARD.

For whatever reason, I had zero energy. All I wanted to do was sleep and eat food that wasn’t remotely part of the program. (It’s mostly a high-protein, clean-eating diet.) I think it’s been a combination of things - growing baby = higher caloric intake, sleep deprivation, blazing temperatures here in Portland, hormonal changes and just being busy.

So, I’ve been off the wagon. Like, way off. As in, not doing anything other than chasing around my three babies (which is a workout in itself). But I’m hoping to get started again within the next week or two. I’m not going to pressure myself though until I feel ready because I know my body is probably telling me to chill the eff out.

Even with my lack of exercise the past few weeks, I do think the short while that I was on the program made a difference, as the definition in my abs has started to return. You can see this in the two photos below.

BUT!

Don’t go thinking I don’t have a long road ahead of me. This is what I look like when I’m not totally sucking in my belly:

Yep. That is the real me. The one you see at the playground with puke on my shoulder and poop smeared on my sleeve.

When I update again, I’ll hopefully be able to show you guys what an amazing transformation I’ve had while on the Bikini Body Guide. I’m sure that some think it’s weird that I’m posting these photos here, but it really helps to motivate me to see the progress.

Oh, and for the record, my goal has been - and remains - to get healthy and strong. I’ve always been a thin person. I know this. But thin doesn’t equal healthy! I can’t keep up with my husband/kids on the most basic hike or aerobic activity. This is about having a long and fun future with my family. And, you know, about fitting into my cute handmade wardrobe. :)

P.S. Is that not the CUTEST baby you’ve ever seen?!

Amazing work! It took me months to lose my baby weight after baby #3. Even now 2 years later, I still have extra stretched-out skin on my stomach that I’m pretty sure will be with me until the end of my days. That six-pack has become more elusive than ever…

I did the Bikini Body Guides for a while. I liked them, though I kind of got bored and burned out on it after 9-10 weeks. I’ll look forward to seeing your progress when you’re done!

Yeah, I can see myself getting bored with BBG since I get bored with all forms of exercise. :( Hopefully I can stick it out at least long enough to get back to pre-preg size (or close) and then just resume fun, active activities. :)

He’s such a cutie! Thanks for posting all this - I’m about 25 weeks pregnant right now and feeling quite nervous about what after will be like (partly for sewing reasons, partly for whether I’ll be able to be OK with my body, given what it will hopefully have just been through) so it’s helpful to see some honesty. You look amazing for 8 weeks! Though I have to say I was quite relieved to see the non-tummy-sucking-in-photo :-) Do you have any advice for sewing in the third trimester and the post-partum weeks for having stuff that will be useful for more than a couple of weeks?

    • http://www.laurendahl.com/ Lauren Dahl

Thank you, Rachel! Every body is so different, you know? It’s one of those wait-and-see kind of things. For example, I was lucky enough to completely bypass stretch marks despite doing nothing to prevent them. I think I just got really lucky in that department since I gained 50+ pounds with all three pregnancies!

Sewing in the third trimester…well, I sewed stuff based on my pre-pregnancy measurements and just went with it. I am just now starting to fit into those things. :)

Well, my body doesn’t look like that, though my little one will be three months tomorrow. And I certainly don’t fit my old pants or tops, having grown 5 cupsizes. I also get tired and was told as I was breastfeeding, calorie restrictions should certainly not happen, especially as I am eating very healthy. I could excercise a bit more, though lugging about a 11 pound baby all day should count for something.
I have decided to get fit with the kid, if he starts running I start running. Also: progressive weight training! 😛

Dalia - It took me longer, actually, with my second baby. I think this time I’m just super motivated because I feel like I was pregnant/nursing for five years straight, and I’m soooo ready to get back into shape and to be able to wear my clothes again!!! And yes, weight training for sure!

You have lost your weight quickly! Wow! You look great, girl! Keep it up! So you don’t work out a gym? I have zero discipline when it comes to working out at home. Kudos to your self discipline!

Thanks, Justine! We basically have a full gym set up in our garage. Well, as far as weights go. Plus we have a rowing machine, and I have a stepper thing in my office. I don’t get to the gym much with the kids, so the garage is good. The BBG is kind of like my class that’s holding me accountable. But like I said - I need to get back to it!

Seriously, you’re looking great! That last bit of weight was always the hardest, but was usually gone around the 6 month mark for me. Eating well is super important (though really hard!) so definitely cut yourself some slack for dropping off the exercise routine. In the meantime, sub in something more manageable like really brisk walks. Squeezing in just 10 or 15 minutes can make a big difference. Good luck!

Thank you so much, Lisa! Eating well is the HARDEST for me. I snack on junk food all day long. I am working on it though. :)

I love that you said you were almost back to normal and have 15 pounds to go! I just hit the four month postpartum (third baby in less than five years) and have hit a plateau (six weeks!) with 20 pounds to go. But I have been thinking that feels so far! I think it will help my attitude to think of it instead as being on the home stretch! Thank you! And you look great!
