Bohemian Babydoll Sewing Pattern by Elegance & Elephants

June 19, 2014

The Bohemian Babydoll sewing pattern by Elegance & Elephants can be summed up in one word: gorgeous. I'm not just saying that. This little dress seems like it was made for Harper. You can tell from the photos that she loves wearing it, and I love seeing her in it. Even her daddy thought it was precious (and he's often indifferent to her fashion choices).

I'm going to tell you all about it, but in case you want to go ahead and buy it, you can get it in the Elegance and Elephant Shop here.

And yes, that is an affiliate link, but I will never tell you guys to buy a pattern that I wouldn't recommend anyway. For realz, this one is good.

The pattern itself went together wonderfully. I chose a size 2 after carefully checking the size chart because that's what Harper normally wears. It fits perfectly, and she is about 20" in the chest and 35" tall. The pattern pieces were professionally graded and marked well to make cutting and sewing the pieces together a breeze.

As you can see, I used some Liberty of London Tana Lawn that I had left over from my Wiksten Tova you can see here. This was kind of crazy for me since I am a big muslin maker and...well...$35/yard fabric and all...but hey, sometimes I live dangerously.

Before cutting the front piece, I cut a rectangle of fabric a little wider than the pattern piece and put some pin tucks down the center front. I framed those with some lace I bought at Jo-Ann. I love the effect this has on the overall look.

The only changes I made to the construction of the dress itself were that 1) I used bias tape around the armholes/neck opening and 2) I did a narrow hem at the bottom instead of facings because I didn't have enough fabric I am lazy. I just couldn't seem to wrap my head around the prescribed finishing technique for the armholes/neck opening, but that is my own fault for being a bit scatterbrained. It happens.

As for the photos, we took these in my new favorite location: Neff's Canyon in Olympus Cove overlooking Salt Lake City. It's perfect because there are lots of trees to filter the sun, and we can go earlier than the typical golden hour since it's kind of down in a hole. The sun sets a little earlier in the canyon, so I think we were able to snap these around 6:30pm instead of my usual 8-ish.

I can't wait to make more of these in the tunic length and maybe some in a longer length for more booty coverage. I love this length on Harper, but she definitely needs some shorties underneath since she has zero concept of modesty. But what 3-year-old does, right?

Bottom line: I couldn't be happier with this pattern and dress and highly recommend it. So visit the Elegance and Elephants Shop and get sewing!

I was weepy on the way to work this morning...sad about my kids growing up...missing the newborn stage...anxious about certain things not progressing faster than they are...struggling with mommy guilt... Then, my normal route was blocked due to accidents, and I ended up driving by this iconic Portland wall. It means nothing and so much at the same time. We find meaning where we place value. Happiness is up to us everything we choose is everything that matters. #portlandnw #portland #portlandoregon #momlife

People ask me all the time if they should have a third baby...I always laugh and say "of course!" Truth is that yes, all babies are awesome but this struggle is FORRRRR REAL. Mine were all born within four years which means even small tasks like going potty are a huge undertaking. None of them can go by themselves (yet), so this double stroller goes everywhere with me. Yes, my 2yo can walk. But he can also dart off when I am wiping or washing hands or changing. People judge me for my big stroller but then a kid gets hurt while just being a kid and people blame the mom for being a crappy parent. Can't win. So when you see a tired mom like me, save the Mormon jokes and offer a hand (yes, I get that constantly and no, I'm not even Mormon...not that there's anything wrong with that). I cry the ugly cry some days because this path can feel so incredibly isolating yet so magical at the same time. Here is almost always a baby on my person because with three, you cant really trade off anymore. Who's with me?! 😵 #momsunite #momlife
Edited to add: yes, my kids now go to preschool three days a week when I am in the office at my new job. Doesn't matter the situation. It's all wonderful and so, so hard at the same time.
I'm having a really tough mommy day but these flowers are pretty! On repeat: this, too, shall pass. Let's just try for no potty accidents today.
